In the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad (The Eckankar Bible), page 42:
“The Sugmad (God) roused itself and looked over the vastness of its domain; saw only creatures of its own making (Souls) in play, amusing themselves without giving to one another. It whispered and the Word went forth into the worlds of worlds.
The worlds shook and all Souls flew to find safety, but none was to be found. They stood and trembled before the mighty Sugmad, the God of all gods and listened.
“You have played when you needed to give succor and life to others; you must learn the truth by dwelling in my mansions below. In the house of your Father! You shall return to my home when ready.
None knew what the Voice of the Lord was saying. Yet all who heard Its Voice wondered. It was to build new worlds in which each Soul would spend its youth, to germinate and spiritually unfold; to learn its true nature and mission throughout the universes of God.”
Thus, the God worlds were created – the Higher (spiritual and positive) worlds and the Lower psychic and negative) worlds.
For the purpose of this short and simple illustration, Souls were sent down from the positive worlds into the negative worlds to gain experience. The negative worlds are the worlds of cause and effect, where karma rules. The lowest of these lower worlds is of course the Physical worlds which consist of Earth and all the physical planets where life exists on different vibrations.
“The physical world is a world of turmoil and strife. Never shall there be any peace in it. This is the way of the Sugmad (God). It is so designed that the Pinda worlds shall have nothing but strife, for the good of each Soul that must dwell therein, For these worlds are the testing ground of Soul; the place it must spend its long periods of existence, creating perfection and spiritual maturity” – SKS page 73.
Soul wears sheaths or bodies as it descends from the pure spiritual planes into the negative worlds. These bodies or sheaths are the Etheric, Mental, Causal, Astral and Physical bodies. These bodies also correspond to the different levels of heavens. In the Christian Bible, St. Paul said he was lifted into the 3rd heaven, he was talking about the Causal plane – the Heaven of Christians and other Eastern religions. These heavens are still subject to the whims of the Lords of Karma and reincarnation.
Above the Physical world is the Astral plane, where Soul on leaving the body unconsciously during the sleep cycle operate and remembers as dreams. The ruler of this plane is Jot Niranjan, the negative power, king over all the Astral and physical worlds. This is also the Plane or world where Soul, at the death of the physical body, takes up living.
At the death of the physical body, “It must stand before Dharam Raya, the judge of the Kangra Samba (death) and receive its just award. There are no complaints nor favors, and justice is rendered to all. It is then taken to the region or condition where it has earned its residence, be it good or bad. It must remain there for a fixed time according to the judgment rendered.
After its time has expired, it is then returned to this world, or some other world, to once more begin a new life in the physical body. It takes up where it left off, somewhere in one of its past lives, and starts once again, depending upon its karma” – SKS page 74.
In Eckankar, Soul is seen as a spark of God, eternal and divine. But to fully realize Its true nature, Soul must journey through the worlds of time and space – starting from lower forms of life and eventually reaching human consciousness.
This journey is governed by the Law of Karma: every action (thought, word, or deed) has a consequence. To balance karma, Soul reincarnates again and again, each life bringing opportunities to:
Reincarnation is not random. It’s a divinely guided process, often overseen by spiritual beings called the Lords of Karma, who help place Soul where it can best continue its spiritual unfoldment. The Mahanta, the Living ECK Master, also plays a guiding role, especially for those who seek spiritual freedom in this lifetime.
Spiritual freedom begins when Soul graduates into the Higher Worlds of Spirit (the Positive and Higher worlds) through what is called initiations in Eckankar. Thus, the cycle of endless births and deaths can be broken so that Soul does not have to remain locked in this cycle.
